Brother Printer Issues: Other Common Problems and Fixes

Streaky prints, scans that won't come through, a blinking status light, a fax that won't send, or an app that can't find your machine — here's how to work through each one.

Not every Brother printer problem fits neatly into "offline," "paper jam," or "won't connect to Wi-Fi." Plenty of the messages people search for don't show up until the printer is otherwise working fine, things like pages coming out streaky, a scan that never reaches your computer, a light blinking in a pattern you don't recognize, or a fax that keeps stalling. These issues have their own causes and their own fixes, and lumping them in with connectivity troubleshooting usually wastes time. Below are the fixes for the problems that don't belong anywhere else.

Causes

These "other" issues tend to trace back to a handful of causes:

• Dried or clogged print head nozzles on inkjet models, usually from sitting unused for a while
• A dirty or worn drum unit, or a corona wire that's shifted out of position, on laser models
• Dust, smudges, or debris on the scanner glass or the automatic document feeder (ADF) rollers
• The machine's scanner driver not registered with your computer under "Scan To" settings
• A firewall or security software silently blocking the printer's scan or network traffic
• A phone line plugged into the wrong jack, or a VoIP line that doesn't fully support fax tones
• Stored fax pages or large, image-heavy jobs filling up the machine's limited onboard memory
• The mobile app pointing to an old IP address after the printer reconnected to Wi-Fi

Method 1: Fix Streaky, Faded, or Blank Print Quality

1. Open your Brother machine's control panel or the Brother software on your computer and run a "Print Head Cleaning" (inkjet) cycle, or print a nozzle check pattern to see which colors are affected.
2. If you have a laser model, remove the drum and toner assembly and wipe the drum roller with a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with isopropyl alcohol, then slide the green corona-wire tab back and forth a few times before returning it to its home position.
3. Print a test page. If streaks or lines are still there after two cleaning attempts, the drum unit or cartridge is likely worn and needs replacing rather than cleaning.
4. For consistently light or faint pages, open your print driver settings and raise the print density level, then reprint.

Method 2: Fix Scanning Problems (Blurry Scans or "No PC Found")

1. Lift the scanner lid and wipe the glass, plus the underside of the ADF cover, with a soft, lint-free cloth. Even light dust causes streaks or spots on scans.
2. On your computer, open the Brother ControlCenter software, go to the "Scan To" settings, and confirm your PC is registered and its display name is listed correctly.
3. Temporarily disable your firewall or antivirus and try scanning again. If it works, add the Brother software as an allowed exception and turn the firewall back on.
4. Still stuck? Power the machine off, wait 30 seconds, and turn it back on to clear a stuck network session.

Method 3: Understand a Blinking or Flashing Status Light

1. Don't guess at what a blinking light means. Open the front cover and back panel and make sure both are fully closed and latched, since an open cover is one of the most common causes of an alarm light.
2. Remove and reseat the ink or toner cartridge, then check that the paper tray is inserted all the way and loaded correctly.
3. Match the exact blink pattern (solid, single-flash, or double-flash, and its color) to the LED reference table in your specific model's Basic User's Guide or on Brother's support site, since the same light means different things across different Brother models.
4. If the light won't clear after that, a full power cycle (unplug for 30 seconds, then reconnect) resolves most remaining false alarms.

Method 4: Fix Fax Sending or Receiving Problems

1. Confirm the phone cord runs from the wall jack into the port labeled "LINE" on the machine, not "EXT," which is reserved for an extension phone.
2. Run the built-in fax test from the machine's menu (usually under Fax or Initial Setup) to check the line connection automatically.
3. If you're on a VoIP or internet-based phone line, check with your provider that fax tones are supported. Standard VoIP compression frequently drops fax signals even when regular calls work fine.
4. If the display shows "Memory Full" while faxing, press Stop if it happens on the first page to cancel, or press Start on later pages to send what's already scanned. Then go to the machine's memory menu and delete any stored faxes you no longer need.

Method 5: Fix Mobile App and Wireless Printing Issues

1. Check that your phone or tablet is on the same Wi-Fi network as the printer, not a guest network or mobile data.
2. Open Brother Mobile Connect (or Brother iPrint&Scan on older models), remove the printer from the app, and add it again so the app picks up its current IP address.
3. From the printer's own network settings menu, confirm Wireless LAN is turned on and, for iPhone or iPad, that AirPrint is enabled.
4. Update the app to the latest version, since Brother periodically drops support for older app builds on newer printer firmware.
