Epson Printer Driver: Download, Install, Update, and Troubleshoot

Get the right driver for your Epson model, set it up without the usual errors, and clear the "driver is unavailable" message on Windows 10, Windows 11, and macOS.

The Epson printer driver is the software that lets your computer and your printer understand each other. When it is missing, out of date, or damaged, you run into problems like a printer that shows as offline, print jobs that sit in the queue, a "driver is unavailable" note in Windows, or missing options such as double-sided printing and scanning.

This guide walks you through four things: getting the correct driver from Epson, installing it cleanly, keeping it current, and fixing the errors people hit most often.

Fix "Epson Printer Driver Is Unavailable"

"Driver is unavailable" appears under Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners in Windows 11, or Devices > Printers & scanners in Windows 10. It means Windows cannot find a working driver for that printer. The common causes are a driver file that got corrupted, a Windows feature update that kept an older driver in place, or a stuck job that is tying up the print spooler.

Work through these fixes in order. Most people are printing again after the first two.

1. Install pending Windows updates

Windows delivers many Epson driver updates through Windows Update, and the matching system update often clears the error by itself.

  1. Open Settings and go to Windows Update.
  2. Click Check for updates and install everything offered. Also open Advanced options > Optional updates > Driver updates and install any Epson item there.
  3. Restart the computer and try printing again.

2. Remove the printer and reinstall the driver

This is the fix that works most often, because it clears the broken driver instead of installing on top of it.

  1. Go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners, click your Epson model, and choose Remove.
  2. Open Device Manager (right-click Start, then Device Manager). Expand Print queues, right-click the Epson entry, and select Uninstall device. If the checkbox appears, tick Delete the driver software for this device.
  3. Restart the computer.
  4. Download the latest driver for your exact model from epson.com/support (steps in the next section) and run the installer.

3. Run the Windows printer troubleshooter

  1. Open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
  2. Find Printer and click Run. On current Windows 11 builds this opens the Get Help app, which runs the checks automatically.
  3. Follow the prompts. It can restart the spooler, clear the queue, and reset the default printer.

4. Check the connection and the spooler

  • For a USB printer, try another cable and a port on the computer itself rather than a hub.
  • For a wireless printer, confirm the printer and the computer are on the same Wi-Fi network.
  • If jobs still will not move, press Windows + R, type services.msc, right-click Print Spooler, and choose Restart.

If the trouble started right after a Windows feature update, see our guide on Epson printer issues after a Windows update.

How to Download Epson Printer Drivers

Every Epson driver is free from the official support site. Avoid the "driver download" pages that show up in search ads, since they often carry outdated files or extra software you did not ask for.

  1. Find your model number. It is on a label on the front or top of the printer, for example ET-2850, WF-2930, or L3250.
  2. Go to epson.com/support and type that model number into the search box.
  3. Open your printer's page and select the Downloads tab.
  4. Set the operating system dropdown to match your computer, such as Windows 11, Windows 10 64-bit, or macOS 15.x. The list then hides files that will not work for you.
  5. Choose the right package. Download the Drivers and Utilities Combo Package when it is listed. It includes the print driver, the scanner driver for all-in-one models, and Epson tools such as ScanSmart. If you only need to print, the smaller Printer Driver file is enough.
  6. Save the file somewhere easy to find, like your Downloads folder.

Outside the United States, your regional Epson site or support.epson.net carries the same files.

How to Install Epson Printer Drivers

Before you begin, turn the printer on and connect it the way you plan to use it, by USB or on your Wi-Fi network. Close other programs so the installer can replace files without a restart.

On Windows

  1. Open your Downloads folder and double-click the file you saved. It usually ends in .exe.
  2. If a User Account Control window asks for permission, click Yes.
  3. Confirm your printer model when the installer shows it, then pick your language.
  4. Read the license agreement and accept it to continue.
  5. Choose your connection type when asked, wireless or USB, and let the installer find the printer.
  6. Wait for it to finish, then print the test page from the final screen.

On macOS

  1. Double-click the downloaded .dmg file, then run the installer package inside it.
  2. Enter your Mac password when prompted and work through Continue, Agree, and Install.
  3. When it finishes, open System Settings > Printers & Scanners (System Preferences on older macOS) and click Add Printer or the plus button.
  4. Select your Epson printer. In the Use menu, pick the Epson driver rather than AirPrint if you want full features such as borderless printing and ink levels.
  5. Click Add.

Many recent Epson models print over AirPrint on a Mac, iPhone, or iPad with no driver at all. Install the full driver when you need scanning or the printer's advanced settings.

How to Update Epson Printer Drivers

Update the driver when you move to a new version of Windows or macOS, when a feature stops working after a system update, or when Epson posts a newer release for your model.

Check for an update on the Epson site

  1. Go to epson.com/support and open your model's Downloads tab.
  2. Set the operating system dropdown to your current version.
  3. Compare the version number and date online with what you have installed. In Windows, check the installed version in Device Manager under the driver's Properties > Driver tab.
  4. If the site has a newer file, download and run it. The installer replaces the old driver in place, so you usually do not need to remove anything first.

Use Epson Software Updater

This small utility installs with most driver packages and checks for newer drivers, firmware, and software for your model. Open it from the Start menu on Windows, or from Applications > Epson Software on a Mac, and run the check.

Let Windows do it

Open Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates, expand Driver updates, tick any Epson item, and click Download & install.

On macOS

Apple's system updates include many Epson driver updates. Keep macOS current under System Settings > General > Software Update, and reinstall from the Epson site only if a specific feature is missing.

If an update does not fix the problem, a clean reinstall (remove the printer, then install fresh) usually does.

FAQs

Where do I download the correct Epson printer driver?

Go to epson.com/support, search for your exact model number, open the Downloads tab, and set the operating system dropdown to your version of Windows or macOS. Download the Drivers and Utilities Combo Package for printing and scanning, or the Printer Driver file for printing only. Both are free.

Remove the printer under Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners, uninstall the driver in Device Manager, and restart the computer. Then install the latest driver from epson.com/support. Installing all pending Windows updates first clears the error for many people.

Not for basic printing. Most Epson printers from the last several years support AirPrint, so a Mac, iPhone, or iPad can print with no download. You do need the full Epson driver to scan from an all-in-one and to reach settings like borderless photos or paper-type selection.

It registers your printer for Epson Connect, the service behind Email Print, Remote Print, and Scan to Cloud, and on a Mac it also adds the printer to your system. Download it from epson.com/support, then follow the prompts: Continue, Agree, Install, select your product, choose Printer Registration, and sign in or create an Epson Connect account.

Epson Smart Panel is the current mobile app for setup, printing, scanning, and ink checks, and it ships with newer Epson printers. Epson iPrint is the older app and is still used for some older models, though availability varies by region and changes over time. If your printer is recent, install Smart Panel from the App Store or Google Play.

A Windows feature update sometimes keeps an older driver and blocks the current one. Uninstall the printer and its driver, then reinstall the latest version from Epson to restore it. Our Epson printer issues after a Windows update guide covers each step.
