A stuck print queue almost always comes down to one thing: a single job failed partway through, and every job behind it is now waiting on a file that will never finish. The printer itself is usually fine. Once you remove the bad job and restart the part of Windows or macOS that manages printing, the rest of the queue tends to print on its own.
If you have 60 seconds, start here:
- Turn the printer off, wait a full minute, and turn it back on.
- On your computer, open the print queue and cancel every job in the list.
- Send one test page.
That alone fixes it for a lot of people. If the job still hangs, work through the fixes below in order. They go from quickest to most thorough.
Why HP Print Jobs Get Stuck in the Queue
Print jobs stall for a small set of common reasons:
- The job got interrupted. The printer went to sleep, dropped off Wi-Fi, or was switched off before the last job finished. That leaves a half-sent file sitting in the queue.
- A spool file is corrupted. Windows saves each job to disk before sending it. If that file is damaged, the printer cannot read it and will not move past it.
- The Print Spooler has hung. This is the Windows service that feeds jobs to the printer. When it freezes, the whole queue freezes with it.
- The driver is outdated or damaged. A driver that no longer matches your printer's firmware or your version of Windows can send data the printer rejects.
- The printer is paused or set to work offline. Both "Use Printer Offline" and "Pause Printing" hold every job in place.
- Windows is printing to the wrong device. If a disconnected or virtual printer is set as the default, jobs stack up against a printer that isn't there.
- The printer is waiting on something physical. Low ink or toner, an empty paper tray, a jam, or an open cover will hold the queue until you clear it.
- The network address changed. On Wi-Fi printers, the router can hand out a new IP address, so your computer keeps sending jobs to an address the printer no longer answers to.
- Security software is blocking the connection. Some third-party firewalls close the port the printer talks on.
A job that disappears and comes back points to the spooler or the driver. A job that never moves and shows an error message points to the printer or its connection. That distinction tells you where to start.
Fix 1: Clear the Queue and Restart the Printer
Windows 11
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select your HP printer, then click Open print queue.
- Right-click each job and choose Cancel, or open the Printer menu and choose Cancel All Documents.
- In that same Printer menu, confirm that Pause Printing and Use Printer Offline are both unchecked.
- Turn the printer off, wait 60 seconds, turn it back on, and print a test page.
Windows 10
Same steps, starting from Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners.
Mac
- Open the Apple menu > System Settings > Printers & Scanners (System Preferences on older versions).
- Select your printer and click Open Print Queue.
- Click the X next to each job to delete it.
- If a job refuses to delete, open Terminal, type
cancel -a, and press Return. You may be asked for your Mac password. - Restart the printer and try printing again.
If jobs clear but the next one sticks too, the file behind the queue is likely corrupted. Move to Fix 2.
Fix 2: Restart the Print Spooler and Clear the Spool Folder (Windows)
When a job will not cancel, deleting the file by hand is what finally clears it.
- Press Windows key + R, type
services.msc, and press Enter. - Scroll to Print Spooler, right-click it, and choose Stop. Leave this window open.
- Open File Explorer and go to
C:\Windows\System32\spool\PRINTERS. - Delete everything inside that folder. Do not delete the PRINTERS folder itself. If Windows asks for permission, click Continue.
- Return to the Services window, right-click Print Spooler, and choose Start.
- Turn the printer off and back on, then send one test page.
Prefer the command line? Open Command Prompt as administrator and run these one at a time:
del /Q /F /S "%systemroot%\System32\spool\PRINTERS\*.*"
If the Print Spooler keeps stopping on its own within a minute of starting, that points to a damaged driver or a corrupted system file. Run sfc /scannow in the same admin Command Prompt, let it finish, restart the computer, then reinstall the driver using Fix 5.
Fix 3: Reset the Printing System (Mac)
If cancel -a doesn't clear the queue, or the printer shows as "Paused" and will not resume, reset the Mac printing system. This clears every queued job and every saved print setting, and it removes all printers, so you will add your HP printer back afterward.
- Open System Settings > Printers & Scanners.
- Right-click (or Control-click) anywhere in the printer list on the left.
- Choose Reset printing system and confirm.
- Restart the printer.
- Click Add Printer, Scanner, or Fax, select your HP printer, and click Add.
On most current HP models, macOS downloads the correct driver automatically during setup. Print a test page before you send anything large.
Fix 4: Run HP's Built-In Repair Tools
HP has two free tools that check the queue, the spooler, the connection, and the driver in a single pass.
HP Smart app (Windows and Mac). Install HP Smart from the Microsoft Store, the Mac App Store, or the HP website. Open it and run Diagnose & Fix: on Windows, click the wrench icon at the bottom left; on Mac, open the printer dropdown in the top menu bar. Follow the prompts and let it restart the print services for you.
HP Print and Scan Doctor (Windows only). Download it from HP's support site, open it, click Start, and pick your printer. It tests the spooler and queue and offers to fix what it finds. If it reports that it cannot repair a hung Print Service, go back to the manual spooler steps in Fix 2, then restart both the PC and the printer.
Fix 5: Update or Reinstall the HP Printer Driver
If the queue jams every few jobs, the driver is the usual suspect. Remove it fully and install a clean copy.
Windows
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners, select the HP printer, and choose Remove.
- Press Windows key + R, type
printui /s /t2, and press Enter to open Print Server Properties. - On the Drivers tab, select your HP driver, click Remove, and choose Remove driver and driver package.
- Restart the computer.
- Install the current driver from HP's support site for your exact model, or set the printer up again through the HP Smart app.
Mac
Remove the printer in Printers & Scanners, restart, and add it back. If the problem continues, run the printing system reset in Fix 3.
Worth checking: if the trouble started right after a Windows update, some recent Windows 11 updates have been reported to remove printers or damage their drivers. Reinstalling the driver as above usually restores normal printing.
Fix 6: If Your HP Printer Is on Wi-Fi, Check the Port
On a network printer, the queue can stall because the router gave the printer a new IP address and Windows is still sending to the old one.
- Print a network configuration page from the printer's control panel and note its IP address, usually under Settings > Network or Wireless.
- On the computer, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners, select the printer, and open Printer properties.
- On the Ports tab, confirm the checked port matches the printer's current IP address.
- If it doesn't, click Configure Port and enter the correct address, or click Add Port > Standard TCP/IP Port and set it up with the new one.
- To keep it from recurring, reserve the printer's IP address in your router settings or set a static IP on the printer.
Keep the Queue From Freezing Again
A few habits go a long way:
- Give a Wi-Fi printer a fixed address. A static IP on the printer, or a DHCP reservation in your router, means your computer always reaches it at the same place.
- Keep firmware and drivers current. Check for HP firmware updates from the printer's control panel or the HP Smart app every couple of months.
- Let jobs finish before switching the printer off. Powering down mid-print is the most common way a spool file gets corrupted.
- Cancel failed jobs instead of resending. Hitting print again just stacks a second job behind the stuck one.
- Add a printer exception to your firewall. If you run third-party security software, allow your HP printer and the spooler service through it.
