What an Dell Printer Error Code Is Telling You and How to Fix Them
Dell didn't design one universal code system. Its printers were built on engines from a few different manufacturers, so the format of your code tells you a lot before you even look it up.
Six digits with a dash (like 016-370 or 077-900): This is the format on most Dell color laser printers and many mono lasers, including the 1250c, 1355cn, 2150cn, 2155cn, 3130cn, C1760nw, C1765nfw, C3760dn, and 5130cdn. The first three digits point to the part of the printer involved, and the last three narrow down the exact fault.
Two digits with a decimal (like 31.xx or 200.xx): You'll see these on Dell mono lasers such as the 2330dn, 2350dn, 3330dn, and 3333dn.
Four digits (like 1200, 1203, or 2200): These come from Dell's older inkjet and all-in-one printers, such as the 922, 926, 962, and 964.
Write down the full code, including every digit after the dash or decimal. Two codes that start the same way can point to completely different parts. For example, 009-360 is a yellow toner problem, while 009-363 is black.
Try This Before Anything Else
A lot of Dell error codes are temporary glitches that clear with a proper restart. Not a quick tap of the power button, but a real reset:
Turn the printer off with its power switch.
Unplug the power cord from the wall, and disconnect the USB or Ethernet cable.
Wait at least 60 seconds so the internal boards fully drain.
Plug the power cord back in directly to a wall outlet, not a power strip or surge protector if you can avoid it.
Turn the printer on and let it finish warming up before you reconnect the data cable.
If the code comes back right away, note whether it shows up at power-on or only when you print. That detail matters. A code that appears the moment the printer wakes up usually points to hardware. One that only appears during a job often traces back to the paper, the cartridge, or the print settings.
Common Dell Printer Error Codes and How to Fix Them
Error 016-370: Restart Printer
What it means: Dell's service manuals describe 016-370 as a communication failure between two circuit boards inside the printer. One is the MCU, which runs the print engine. The other is the ESS, the main controller that handles your jobs. The screen usually just says "Restart Printer." It's been reported on models like the 2130cn, 3100cn, 3110cn, 3130cn, and 5110cn.
How to fix it:
Do the full reset from the section above. A one-time glitch between the boards often clears here.
If the error returns, check Dell's support site for a firmware update for your model and install it. Corrupted or outdated firmware is a common trigger.
If the code keeps coming back after a firmware update, one of the two boards (or the connection between them) is likely failing. That's a technician's repair, not a DIY job.
Error 004-332 and 093-310: Restart Printer or Toner Cartridge Rotate Error
What it means: On the Dell 3000cn, 3010cn, and 3100cn, the toner cartridges sit in a rotating carousel. These codes mean the carousel couldn't turn the way it should, usually because a cartridge isn't seated right or something is physically in the way.
How to fix it:
Turn the printer off, wait 10 seconds, and turn it back on.
Remove all four toner cartridges, wipe them with a clean dry cloth, and make sure the orange plastic covers are off the developer rollers. Those covers are easy to miss on a new cartridge.
Reinstall each cartridge firmly.
If the error stays, power off and unplug the printer. Remove the imaging drum and check the developer rotor frame for bends. With the drum out, gently push on a toner cartridge handle to see whether the carousel moves freely.
A bent frame or a carousel that won't budge needs a repair.
Errors 009-360 to 009-363: Toner Cartridge Communication Error
What it means: Each Dell toner cartridge has a small chip (Dell calls it a CRUM) that tells the printer what's installed and how much toner is left. These codes mean the printer can't read that chip on one cartridge:
009-360: Yellow
009-361: Magenta
009-362: Cyan
009-363: Black
How to fix it:
Turn the printer off and back on to confirm the error returns.
Pull out the cartridge for the color shown and reinstall it firmly so the chip makes good contact.
If you're using a compatible or refilled cartridge, the chip may not be one the printer accepts. Many Dell color lasers have a Non-Dell Toner setting that lets the printer run without reading the chip. It's usually in the Admin menu under Maintenance on the control panel. You can also reach it through the Dell Printer Setting Utility. Keep in mind the printer won't track toner levels once it's turned on.
If a genuine Dell cartridge still throws the code, try a different cartridge. If a new cartridge doesn't fix it, the contacts inside the printer may be the problem.
Error 093-xxx: Toner Low, Empty, or Unsupported
What it means: The 093 family covers toner status. The last digit usually tells you the color (yellow, magenta, cyan, black, in that order).
093-423 to 093-426: Toner is getting low, with roughly 20% left. You can keep printing, but order a replacement.
093-930 to 093-933: The cartridge has reached the end of its life and needs to be replaced.
093-960 to 093-963: The printer detected a cartridge it doesn't support.
How to fix it: For low or empty messages, replace the cartridge for the color named. For the unsupported messages, reseat the cartridge first, then confirm it's the right cartridge for your exact model. If you knowingly use third-party toner, the Non-Dell Toner setting described above can let the printer carry on.
Errors 010-317, 010-351, and 010-421: Fuser Errors
What it means: The fuser is the heated unit that melts toner onto the page. On models like the C2660dn, C3760dn, and C3765dnf, Dell lists these codes:
010-317: The fuser is loose, not seated properly, or missing.
010-421: The fuser is nearing the end of its life. Plan a replacement.
010-351: The fuser has reached the end of its life. The printer won't print until you replace it.
On the C3760 series, Dell rates the fuser for about 100,000 pages or five years. It's a wear part, just like toner.
How to fix it:
Turn the printer off, unplug it, and give the fuser at least 30 minutes to cool. It runs hot enough to burn you.
Open the rear cover and check that the fuser is pushed fully into place and locked. Reseat it for 010-317.
For 010-351, replace the fuser. After installing a new one, reset the fuser life counter if your model asks for it. Your user guide shows the exact menu.
Errors 077-900 and 077-901: Paper Jam
What it means: The printer's sensors think paper is stuck somewhere in the paper path. On the 1250c, 1355cn, C1660w, C1760nw, C1765nfw, and E525w, Dell separates them by location:
077-900: Jam near the rear of the printer, around the fuser and output area.
077-901: Jam in the feed area, closer to where paper enters.
The frustrating part is that this code sometimes shows up when you can't see any paper at all. A torn corner or a small scrap sitting on a sensor is enough to trigger it.
How to fix it:
Turn the printer off and remove the paper tray or all loaded paper.
Look into the tray opening for partly fed sheets. Grab them by both edges and pull slowly.
If the code stays, unplug the printer, open the rear cover, and lift the fuser pressure levers (usually small tabs on the upper left and right).
For 077-900, pull stuck paper down and out of the fuser area and check the output tray. For 077-901, pull the paper up toward the top. Use both hands and even pressure so it doesn't tear.
Lower the levers, close the cover, and plug the printer back in.
Load a single sheet and run a paper purge. On the C1765nfw, hold the AC button for 5 seconds. On the C1660w, C1760nw, and E525w, hold the Cancel (X) button for 5 seconds. The printer pulls the sheet through, which should clear the sensor.
If the jam code returns with nothing in the path, a sensor may be dirty or stuck, and that's worth a service call.
Errors 024-xxx and 075-921: Load Paper or Paper Mismatch
What it means: These aren't breakdowns. The printer is asking for the right paper. Take "024-965 Load Tray 1 Letter Plain" as an example. Your print job asked for Letter plain paper in Tray 1, and the tray is either empty or holds a different size or type. The 075-921 message shows up during manual two-sided printing, when the printer wants you to reload the printed pages to do the second side.
How to fix it: Load the size and type of paper the message names, or change the paper settings in your print dialog to match what's actually in the tray. Make sure the tray guides are snug against the stack, then press the button the screen asks for.
Error 31.xx: Missing or Defective Cartridge (Mono Laser)
What it means: On the Dell 2230d, 2330dn, 2350dn, 3330dn, 3333dn, and 3335dn, 31.xx means the printer can't detect the toner cartridge or thinks it's defective. These printers use a separate toner cartridge and imaging drum that click together, so a bad connection between the two can cause it too.
How to fix it:
Open the front cover and remove the toner and drum assembly.
Separate the toner cartridge from the drum, then snap them firmly back together.
Wipe any loose toner off the contacts on the side of the drum and the underside of the cartridge with a dry, lint-free cloth.
Look inside the printer at the metal contact springs. A bent or stuck contact can cause this error, and a gentle straightening sometimes fixes it. Do this with the printer unplugged.
Reinstall and restart. If it persists, try a different cartridge.
Error 1200: Carrier Stall (Inkjet)
What it means: On Dell inkjet all-in-ones like the 922, the screen shows "Carrier stall" with error 1200 and asks you to check for obstructions. The carrier is the part that holds the ink cartridges and slides back and forth. Something stopped it from moving.
How to fix it:
Turn the printer off and unplug it.
Open the cover and look along the carrier's path for paper scraps, packing tape, or anything else blocking it.
With the power off, gently slide the carrier by hand from one end to the other. It should move smoothly.
Check the thin clear plastic strip that runs behind the carrier. If it's smudged with ink or has slipped out of place, the printer can't track the carrier's position. Wipe it gently with a dry cloth, or one very lightly dampened with water.
Reseat both ink cartridges, plug the printer back in, and turn it on.
Error 1203: Cartridge Error (Inkjet)
What it means: Error 1203 on printers like the Dell 926, 924, and 964 points to a problem with an ink cartridge or its connection to the carrier. It often shows up after installing a refilled or new cartridge.
How to fix it:
Remove both cartridges.
Look for ink smeared on the gold contact area of the carrier and on the cartridge. Clean both with a lint-free cloth or tissue dampened with a few drops of water, then let them dry.
Make sure all protective tape is off the cartridges.
Unplug the printer for a while. Dell users have reported that leaving it unplugged overnight after cleaning the cartridges cleared the error for good.
Reinstall the cartridges, with black in the left slot and color in the right. They aren't interchangeable.
If the error stays, install one cartridge at a time to find out which one is causing it, then replace that cartridge.
Error 2200: Scanner Stall (All-in-One)
What it means: On Dell all-in-ones like the 926 and 962, error 2200 usually appears when you try to scan, copy, or fax. It means the scanner's moving head couldn't travel the way it should.
How to fix it:
Turn the printer off, unplug it, and wait about 30 seconds.
If the printer was recently moved, check for a scanner lock. Some Dell all-in-ones have a small switch that locks the scan head in place for shipping. It has to be unlocked before you can scan.
Lift the scanner lid and make sure nothing is pressing on the glass or blocking the scan head.
Plug the printer back in and try a copy.
If 2200 keeps returning, the scanner motor or its cable may be failing, which usually means a repair.

When a Dell Error Code Won't Go Away
Some codes you can fix in five minutes. Others are the printer telling you a part has worn out. Here's how to tell the difference:
Consumable codes (toner, fuser, drum) are normal wear. Replacing the part is the fix, and it's usually worth doing.
Paper and cartridge codes almost always clear with careful cleaning and reseating.
Board and motor codes generally need a technician. Examples are a 016-370 that survives a firmware update, or a 2200 that never clears.
There's one more thing every Dell printer owner should know. Dell stopped selling its own branded printers on July 31, 2018, and said all of its printer warranties would end by the close of 2021. So if you're working with a Dell printer today, it's out of warranty. Dell still hosts drivers, firmware, and support articles for most models, and compatible toner is widely available. Replacement boards and motors, though, can be hard to find.
Before paying for a major repair, compare the quote to the cost of a new printer. If the fix is a fuser or a set of cartridges, keep the Dell running. If it's a main board on an older inkjet, it's probably time to move on.
FAQs
Why does my Dell printer say paper jam when there's no paper inside?
Usually because a small scrap of paper or dust is sitting on a jam sensor. Remove the tray, open the rear cover, and look closely around the fuser area with a flashlight. Many Dell color lasers can then run a paper purge: load one sheet and hold the Cancel or AC button for 5 seconds.
How do I reset my Dell printer to clear an error code?
Turn it off, unplug the power and data cables, and wait at least a minute. Then plug the power back in and turn it on. This clears most temporary errors. Most Dell lasers also have a full factory reset in the Admin or Maintenance menu, but it erases your network settings.
Can I use non-Dell toner in my Dell printer?
Yes, many Dell color lasers include a Non-Dell Toner setting in the Admin or Maintenance menu. With it turned on, the printer stops relying on the cartridge chip, which can clear 009-36x and 093-96x errors. The trade-off is that the printer can no longer report accurate toner levels.
Does Dell still make or support printers?
Dell stopped selling Dell-branded printers in July 2018. It still offers drivers, firmware, and knowledge base articles on its support site for most models, but the hardware warranties have all ended.
How do I clear a stuck print queue in Windows?
Open Command Prompt as an administrator, type net stop spooler, and press Enter. Go to C:\Windows\System32\spool\PRINTERS and delete the files inside that folder. Then go back to Command Prompt, type net start spooler, and press Enter. Your queue will be empty and ready for a fresh job.
How do I remove a Dell printer from Windows to reinstall it?
Go to Settings, then Bluetooth & devices, then Printers & scanners. Select the Dell printer and choose Remove. Restart the computer, then download the current driver for your model from Dell's support site and install it fresh. There's no need to edit the registry for a normal reinstall.
Where do I find the latest firmware for my Dell printer?
Go to Dell's support site, search for your printer model or enter its Service Tag, and open the Drivers & Downloads section. Firmware updates are listed alongside the drivers. Follow Dell's instructions exactly, and don't turn the printer off while an update is running.
