HP printers are dependable, but every model still shows the occasional error code or on-screen message when something in the print path stops working the way it should. Some of these messages point to a quick software fix you can do in a couple of minutes. Others are the printer's way of telling you a part is worn or a sensor has failed.

How to Read an HP Printer Error Code
Most HP LaserJet codes use a number-dot-number pattern, such as 13.01 or 59.00.F0. The first number is the category, and the digits after the dot narrow it down to a location or a specific fault. A few common categories:
- 10 points to toner supply memory
- 13 points to a paper jam or paper-path problem
- 49 and 79 point to firmware
- 59 points to the imaging drive system
Inkjet models such as ENVY, OfficeJet, and DeskJet usually show either a plain message like "Ink System Failure" or a hexadecimal code such as 0xc18a0001. Write the full code down before you start troubleshooting. The extra digits often decide which fix applies.
HP Printer Error Code 59.F0
Error 59.F0, shown as 59.00.F0 on some panels, appears on color LaserJet models such as the CP3525, CP4025, CP4525, CM4540, M651, and M680. It means the printer cannot properly engage or disengage the Intermediate Transfer Belt (ITB), the component that carries toner from the drums to the paper. A belt that will not rotate, or a faulty transfer-disengagement sensor, is the usual trigger.
Try these steps in order:
- Turn the printer off at the power switch, wait 30 seconds, then turn it back on and let it finish initializing.
- Plug the printer straight into a wall outlet rather than a surge protector or power strip.
- Open the printer and confirm the ITB is fully seated and locked in place, then reseat it.
- Check the sensor and cable connectors on the DC controller for a loose fit and reconnect any that are not fully seated.
If the code returns right after a reseat, the ITB or its drive assembly is most likely worn and needs to be replaced by a qualified service technician.
HP Printer Error Code 79
A 79 error, or 79 Service Error, means the printer's firmware stopped responding. The cause is almost always something being sent to the printer rather than the printer hardware itself: a corrupt print job, a driver that does not match the printer language (PCL versus PostScript), outdated firmware, or a third-party app or network tool pushing bad data to the queue.
- Turn the printer off, wait 30 seconds, then turn it on.
- Clear the print queue on every computer that sends jobs to the printer, not just the one in front of you.
- Disconnect the network cable. If the error clears, a queued job or a software add-on is the cause.
- Update the printer firmware from HP's support pages for your exact model.
- If you recently installed a memory DIMM, a USB device, or a print server accessory, remove it and test again.

HP Printer Supplies Memory Error
This message, often numbered 10.00.00 or 10.0X.00, means the printer cannot read the memory chip, called the e-label, on one of the toner cartridges. That chip stores the toner level and cartridge data. When the printer cannot communicate with it, the cartridge shows as missing or unrecognized even though it is sitting in the machine.
The usual causes are a cartridge that is not fully clicked into place, dirty or bent metal contacts, a scratched chip, or a refilled or non-HP cartridge that the printer does not accept.
- Power the printer off and on.
- Remove the cartridge, check the chip and the contacts for dust or damage, wipe them gently with a dry lint-free cloth, and reinstall the cartridge until it clicks.
- On color models, the middle digits of the code tell you which color cartridge is involved.
- If you have a genuine HP cartridge on hand, install it to see whether the message clears.
A chip that stays unreadable after cleaning means the cartridge is defective and should be replaced.
HP Printer Open or No EP Error
"Open or No EP", shown as Error 12 on older mono LaserJets, means the printer believes the cartridge door is open or that no print cartridge is installed. EP stands for electrophotographic, the original name for the toner cartridge.
- Open the top cover fully, then close it firmly until it latches. A door that is not completely shut leaves the interlock switch open.
- Remove and reinstall the toner cartridge so it sits square in its rails.
- Inspect the plastic tab on the door that presses the interlock switch. A broken or bent tab keeps the printer in this state even with the door closed.
If the door is shut, the tab is intact, and the cartridge is seated but the message stays on screen, the door interlock switch or a related sensor has failed and needs a technician.
HP Printer Error Code 30
"Printer not activated, error code 30", sometimes written as -30, is a Windows error rather than a code on the printer's own display. It means an application could not hand its print job to the printer through Windows. It shows up most often when you print from PDF software, accounting programs, or older third-party apps.
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners and set your HP printer as the default.
- Reinstall the full HP driver for your model instead of relying on the basic Windows driver.
- Press Windows + R, type services.msc, find Print Spooler, right-click it, and choose Restart.
- Right-click the program you are printing from, choose Run as administrator, and try the print again.

HP Printer Error Code 0x83c0000a
Error 0x83c0000a, often paired with the text NOS_LOADER_APP, appears on web-connected inkjets such as ENVY and OfficeJet models. The printer freezes during startup and never finishes loading. It points to a firmware initialization problem, sometimes made worse by a stuck carriage or a cartridge that is not reading correctly.
- With the printer on, unplug the power cord from the back of the printer and from the wall. Wait at least 60 seconds, plug it back into the wall first and then the printer, and power it on.
- If it still hangs, open the cartridge access door, take the cartridges out, close the door, and repeat the power reset. Put the cartridges back afterward.
- Check for a scrap of paper or a piece of packing tape holding the carriage in place.
