Good to know: Ricoh often says "misfeed" instead of "paper jam." If your screen says Paper Misfeed or Remove Misfeed, it means the same thing.

What Causes Paper Jams in a Ricoh Printer?

Jams rarely come out of nowhere. One of these is usually the reason.

Paper Loaded the Wrong Way

Overfilled trays, loose side guides, or a new ream dropped in without fanning it first. Fresh sheets can cling together and feed two at a time. Adding new paper on top of a few leftover sheets is another common trigger.

Paper That's Damp, Curled, or Damaged

Paper absorbs moisture from the air. A ream left open in a humid supply closet or near a window picks up a slight wave, and the paper path can't handle it. Creased, torn, or dog-eared sheets cause the same problem.

The Wrong Paper for the Machine

Ricoh laser models aren't built for inkjet paper, thermal fax paper, perforated sheets, or window envelopes. Very slick or very flimsy paper can slip or buckle on the way through. Cardstock, labels, and envelopes generally feed best from the bypass tray.

Dirty or Worn Feed Rollers

The rubber feed rollers grab each sheet and pull it into the machine. Over time they pick up paper dust and lose their grip. Then the printer either misses the sheet or grabs two at once. On a busy office copier, rollers wear out normally, much like brake pads on a car.

Leftover Scraps and Foreign Objects

A torn corner from an earlier jam, a stray staple, or a sticky note stuck in the paper path will keep causing jams until someone finds it.

A Sensor That Thinks Paper Is Still There

Sometimes the machine reports a jam when the path is empty. The usual reasons are a tiny scrap sitting on a sensor, a cover that isn't fully latched, or dust on the sensor.

Before You Reach Inside: Quick Safety Tips

• Let the fuser cool down. The fusing unit heats toner so it sticks to the page, and it gets very hot. If the jam is behind the rear or right-side cover, wait a few minutes before touching anything.
• Only touch what the machine points you to. Use the levers, knobs, and handles shown on the screen or on the labels inside the covers. Keep your fingers away from everything else.
• Watch out for loose toner. A jammed sheet may be covered in toner that hasn't set yet, and it smears easily onto hands and clothes.
• Don't yank the paper. Hold the sheet by both edges and pull slowly and evenly. If the paper rips, the pieces left inside will cause the next jam.
• Leave the tools in the drawer. Scissors, tweezers, and letter openers can scratch rollers and other delicate internal parts.

How to Fix a Paper Jam in a Ricoh Printer

Step 1: Read the Message on the Screen

Check the control panel before you open any doors. Most Ricoh office machines show a letter code for the jam location, and many show an illustration or animation of the exact cover to open. If jams keep happening, write the code down. A technician will find it useful later.

Step 2: Open the Right Cover and Remove the Paper

Open the tray or cover the screen shows. Find the lever or knob that releases the paper guide in that area. Hold the jammed sheet with both hands and pull it out slowly in the direction paper normally travels. If it won't move, stop. Look for a second release lever, or try reaching the sheet from the next cover along the paper path.

Step 3: Make Sure Nothing Was Left Behind

If the sheet tore, lay the pieces out and check that they make a full page. Any missing piece is still inside the printer. Shine a flashlight around the rollers, and check the back edge of the paper tray, where sheets sometimes get pinched.

Step 4: Close Every Cover Firmly

The jam message won't clear until every door, tray, and cover is fully latched. Push each one until you hear it click.

Step 5: Reload the Paper Properly

Take the paper out of the tray, fan it, and tap the stack on a flat surface to square the edges. Load it below the maximum fill line, then slide the guides snug against the stack without bending it. Confirm that the paper size and type settings for that tray match what you loaded.

Step 6: Print a Few Test Pages

Send a short print job. If the jam was near the fuser, the first few pages may show smudges or loose toner. That's normal right after a jam and should stop after a few prints.

What the Letters in a Ricoh Jam Message Mean

Ricoh uses letters to show where the paper stopped. The exact meaning depends on your model, and the labels inside each cover always have the final say. These are the most common uses in Ricoh's user guides:

One important note on Y jams: Ricoh locks the tray when a jam happens in an optional paper feed unit. Don't force the tray open. Follow the screen instructions to release the paper first.

Larger office models with a finisher or high-capacity tray use extra codes for those units. The screen and the labels inside the covers show where each one is.

Clearing a Jam in the Document Feeder (ADF)

If the jam happened while you were copying or scanning a stack of originals, the problem is in the document feeder on top, not the print path.

1. Take out any originals still in the input tray.
2. Open the ADF cover. On many models, you pull a lever marked P to release it.
3. Gently pull out the stuck original. If it's pinned under the feed roller, some models let you unlock and lift the roller to free the page.
4. Put the roller back if you moved it, close the cover until it clicks, and reload your originals.

To avoid repeat feeder jams, remove staples and paper clips, flatten folded corners, and don't run torn, wrinkled, or very thin originals through the ADF. Put those pages on the glass instead.

Jam Message Still Showing but No Paper Inside?

This is one of the most frustrating printer problems, but it usually has a simple cause. Work through these in order:

• Open the front cover all the way and close it again. On many Ricoh models, this makes the machine check the paper path again.
• Check every cover and tray. One door that's slightly open is enough to keep the message on the screen. Don't forget the duplex unit.
• Look for small scraps. Pull out each paper tray and shine a flashlight into the empty slot. A torn strip no bigger than your thumbnail can block a sensor.
• Restart the machine. Turn it off, wait about a minute, and turn it back on.
• Call for service if it keeps coming back. If the message returns and you still can't find any paper, a sensor may be dirty or out of position. Sensors sit deep inside the machine, so leave this one to a technician.

How to Prevent Paper Jams on Your Ricoh Printer

A few small habits get rid of most jams:

• Store paper flat, sealed, and dry. Ricoh recommends a room between 68 and 77°F with 30 to 65% relative humidity. Reseal opened reams in a plastic bag, and don't store them standing on end.
• Fan every new stack. A quick fan separates sheets that have stuck together in the package.
• Don't add paper on top of old paper. When a tray is almost empty, take out the leftover sheets, put them together with the new stack, fan everything, and reload.
• Stay below the fill line. An overfilled tray is one of the easiest ways to cause a jam.
• Match the tray settings to the paper. This matters most for thick paper, labels, and anything that isn't plain letter-size copy paper.
• Use the bypass tray for specialty paper. Envelopes, labels, and cardstock feed more reliably from there.
• Clean the feed rollers when misfeeds start to increase. Turn off and unplug the printer. Wipe the rubber part of the rollers with a soft cloth dampened with water, then dry them with a clean cloth. Don't use chemical cleaners or solvents.
• Keep up with maintenance. Rollers and other feed parts wear out with use. If cleaning doesn't help, they may need to be replaced.

When a Paper Jam Needs a Technician

Stop troubleshooting on your own and get professional help if:

• The printer keeps jamming in the same spot, even with fresh paper from a sealed ream
• You hear grinding or clicking, or you see a broken lever, gear, or guide
• Paper is wrapped around the fuser or a roller
• There's a scrap you can see but can't safely reach
• A service call (SC) code shows up along with the jam message

A money-saving tip: Many office Ricoh copiers are leased or covered by a service agreement. Read yours before paying for a repair, because roller replacement and jam-related service calls may already be included.
